Breaking the Myth: Yes, You Can Run!

Do you want to try running but you're not a runner??

Have you ever looked at a runner and wondered how they can do it? What motivates them to lace up their sneakers and go? Have they always been runners? Do you wonder if you could do it too? If so, you are not alone. You are exactly where I was 13 years ago. And, I'm here to tell you that Yes, You can do it too. You Can Run!

In my thirteen years of running I've learned a few things that I hope you find helpful and maybe motivate you to give running a try too.

1. If you look up Runner in the dictionary it says "a person who runs, especially in a specified way." Notice that it doesn't say anything about how often, how fast, how much time, what distance or even what terrain. If you're moving in a forward motion faster than your walking speed YOU ARE RUNNING.

2. Running doesn't have to be consistent: It is OK to do run/walk intervals. It is OK to run. Some of us start our running journey run/walking and some of us are able to run consistently. Some of us just love run/walk intervals. WE ARE ALL RUNNERS.

3. Running is like life: Running has phases and ups and downs. Sometimes we can run like the wind, set those personal records, run all the races. And sometimes we need to take a rest, recover and restart. Sometimes we have to modify our goals and make our running fit into our lives. WE ARE STILL RUNNERS.

4. Running is more fun with friends! Truly, nothing beats a morning jog with the girls. It's like chicken soup for the soul! Hanging out with your girlfriends just makes time and miles fly. I highly recommend it, especially if you can finish with a coffee.

5.Running Gear: So.Many.Choices it can be overwhelming but don't let it. To start you will need 3 things ONLY.

  • You need a good pair of running shoes, which you can find at any running store. Yes, they will be more expensive than the pair of shoes you bought at TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack BUT they will be fit to your body's needs. Remember that regardless of how long your running career lasts you will use your feet forever so it's worth it to get fitted. Once you find the shoes that work for you, you can buy them anywhere.
  • You need a supportive sports bra. Some of us can be safe with minimum support while some of us need high impact support. If you're bouncing you can do damage to your breast tissue and it makes running very uncomfortable. Sports bras can be expensive so maybe start your collection with 1 that you keep just for running or high impact activities.
  • You will need shorts or leggings that fit comfortably and don't rub and cause chafing. Any shorts or leggings will do as long as they are comfortable for you and don't chafe you. If you're curious or want to upgrade your wardrobe, many of us have our favorites so just ask a friend and take some out for a spin until you find your new favs.
